The name Lapis Lazuli comes from the Latin word lapis which means “stone” and the Arabic word azula which means “blue”. To be considered lapis lazuli, the stone must be 25% blue lazurite. While most lapis is made up of the beautiful deep blue color that is lazurite, pieces of lapis lazuli usually contain mostly calcite and pyrite.
